What is ultrasound scan technology?
An ultrasound scan (US), also known as sonography, is a medical imaging technique that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of your body. It’s a non-invasive, safe, and is a regularly used method for diagnosing and monitoring various health conditions.
An ultrasound machine uses high-frequency sound waves that are emitted by a small device called a transducer. These sound waves bounce off the structures inside the body and return to the transducer. The machine then converts the sound waves into detailed images that can be viewed on a monitor.
What are ultrasound scans used for?
- Pregnancy and Obstetrics: To monitor the development of the baby, check the placenta, and confirm the baby’s position. and to measure fetal growth and detect any potential problems early on.
- Abdominal scans – To examine organs like the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and pancreas for conditions like stones, cysts, or tumours.
- Heart scans – Echocardiography is a type of ultrasound that looks at the heart’s function and structure.
- Musculoskeletal scans – To assess soft tissues, muscles, and joints for injuries, inflammation, or tears.
- Guided Procedures – To help guide doctors during biopsies or injections to ensure accuracy.

Ultrasound frequently asked questions
An ultrasound scan is generally a quick procedure, typically lasting between 15 to 30 minutes. This includes time to apply the gel, position the transducer, and capture the necessary images. However, the exact duration can vary depending on the area being examined and the complexity of the scan.
During the scan, a clear gel is applied to the area being examined to help transmit sound waves. The radiologist or sonographer will then move a handheld device called a transducer over your skin to capture real-time images. The procedure is painless and non-invasive.
Yes, ultrasounds are very safe. They do not use ionizing radiation like X-rays or CT scans, making them a preferred imaging method, especially during pregnancy.
Preparation is usually simple, though specific instructions may vary based on the type of scan. You may be asked to fast for several hours for abdominal ultrasounds, or drink water and avoid urinating before a pelvic scan. Wear comfortable, loose clothing and avoid applying lotions or creams to the skin in the area to be scanned. Arrive 10–15 minutes early, and try to stay relaxed during the procedure. If you have any health concerns or medical conditions, let the radiologist or sonographer know in advance.
Most routine ultrasound results are available within 24 to 48 hours. In urgent cases, your doctor may request expedited results, which can be provided the same day. A radiologist will analyze your scan and prepare a detailed report, which is sent directly to your referring doctor, who will discuss the findings with you during your follow-up appointment.
After your scan, a radiologist will review and interpret the images to provide an accurate diagnosis. A detailed report will then be prepared and sent to your referring doctor. In some cases, preliminary findings may be shared during your visit. Your doctor will explain the results and any next steps, including whether further imaging or follow-up care is needed.
Yes, all finalized reports are sent directly to your referring doctor. This allows them to review your results promptly and discuss them with you during your follow-up visit. Our secure systems ensure your information remains confidential throughout the process.
Your imaging results are sealed to protect your privacy and ensure that only authorized healthcare professionals access them. This helps maintain confidentiality, ensures accurate interpretation, and allows your doctor to guide you through the findings in the context of your overall health.
Yes, you can request a copy of your results, which may include the diagnostic report and images in digital format. Once your radiologist has finalized the report—usually within 24 to 72 hours—you may collect the results by providing valid identification and signing for them, ensuring secure handling of your medical records.
